GOOD TO KNOW

A few questions,
answered.

Can every document be notarized online?

No. Ontario Regulation 431/20 provides a process for remotely administering oaths and declarations. It does not provide blanket permission for every notarial service. Certified copies, signature witnessing and special document requirements need separate review.

What happens at a remote appointment?

Participants must see, hear and communicate with each other in real time throughout the transaction. The commissioner verifies identity, takes reasonable precautions, uses the required jurat showing both locations, includes applicable stamp information and keeps a transaction record.

Will the receiving organization accept my document?

Please confirm this before your appointment. The regulation does not require every organization to accept remotely commissioned documents. The notary will check the document’s requirements with you.

Should I sign my document first?

Wait for instructions. Have the complete document and your original photo ID ready for the appointment.
